GHANA FINANCIAL SECTOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (GFSDP)

The Ghana Financial Sector Development Project (GFSDP) is a project funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and it aims to facilitate the linkage of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), 428 0f existing ones and approximately 10, 700 VSLAs members to formal Financial Service Providers (FSPs) in the upper West, Upper East, and North East of Ghana.

 The programme will target women ( who form majority of VSLAs members) and the poor. The aim is not to transition VSLAs into FSPs but to give them the opportunity to interact with the Formal Financial Sector and be a vehicle of formal access.

 

Impact

Greater Rural Opportunities for Women(GROW-2)

The GROW project seeks to provide business solutions to rural women whilst improving the nutritional status of their households. The project also provide extension services to the women, capacity building trainings, linkages of women to relevant inputs suppliers, and financial services. It started in 2013 and ended in 2018.

During theses project years, about 6,000 women were mobilised to  form groups known as Village Savings and Loans Associations(VSLA). These VSLA groups were assisted to open accounts with financial institutions 0f their chosen. In addition, 23 viable seed producers were identified and supported to supply seed to these groups for production. This project was in partnership woth MEDA and funded by Global Affairs Canada.

USAID- Accelerating Social And Behavior Change Activity(ASBC)

The USAID- Accelerating Social and Behavior Change Activity (ASBC) is a five-year project which continues USAID’s long investment in the Ghana Health Service (GHS). It will enable Ghana’s Health Promotion Division (HPD) to achieve its Strategic Objective to “lead Social Behavior Change efforts using tested mass media and community engagement tools, and to magnify Communicate for Health learning’s.

USAID- Accelerating Social And Behavior Change Activity(ASBC)

The target populations are (women of reproductive age, newborns,children(less than 5yrs), adolescents/youth less than 25yrs) to sustainably adopt healthy behaviors and practices, including timely use of health services and products nationally and in 17 Districts in Northern Ghana – where the most severe health disparities persist. ProNet North will lead community mobilisation and engagement of district structures and communities and is responsible for achieving measurable behavior change and leading local capacity sharing efforts with Health Promotion Division (HPD) in three (3) districts of the Upper West Region: Nadowli-Kaleo, Daffiama-Bussie-Issa and Wa East districts. The project technical focus areas include Malaria, Nutrition, WASH, Family planning (FP), Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) and Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The USAID- ASBC Activity seeks to promote behaviors such as

SONGTAA - Women Empowerment Program Phase 2

The Songtaa phase one initiative began in 2021 with the primary goals of empowering women, enhancing their livelihoods, and eliminating poverty among women in rural areas. It started with the
recruitment of 100 women beneficiaries in 53 localities. A further 100 beneficiaries from 48 villages were brought on board in 2023, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 200. The project operates in six districts in the upper west region, which include the Wa Mucipal, Nadowli– kaleo, DBI, Wa East, Jirapa and Wa West district. The project work in close collaboration with Unilever GhanaPLC as the main funding agent.

 

As part of the project, there was weekly monitoring, tracking of sales records, restocking of products, reorientation on sales techniques, and robust monitoring and evaluation system. Three Regional Service Providers (RSPs) were mandated to visit the one hundred women in these districts every week to monitor and take the weekly sales recordings of the women and restock the products that were sold.

In order to promote sustainable development and the eradication of poverty, the project aims to empower women in rural areas to fill the gap in rural family income. Each of the 200 beneficiaries received startup capital in the form of a product costing GHS 1261.30 (one thousand, two hundred and sixty one cedis, thirty pesewas), which must be paid in installments after one year of operation at a 0% interest rate.

This is achieved through weekly monitoring and taking of sales records to ensure the beneficiaries women are in operation, restocking of products, reorientation on sales techniques and recovering of product loan. The broad objectives is to empower women and to improve the social status of the targeted
communities through entrepreneurship and to promote standard of living using imperishable and fast moving consumer goods from Unilever Ghana PLC with special focus on hawking.

GIVE ME TAP PROJECT

Over the past few years, Give Me Tap has funded numerous boreholes fitted with hand pumps which has been implemented by ProNet North at selected basic schools in Wa, Upper West.The project is aimed at making clean drinking water available to everyone, everywhere.

This year Give Me Tap, in collaboration with Ralph Lauren have funded 12 boreholes, 10 in basic schools(Balawa, Tanziiri, Bulingin, Maase, Pognyonyiri,, Tantuo, Kelegangn, Betaglu, Naapal, and Kogle-Kundarteng) and 2 CHPS compound at Karni and Sentu.The delegation from the fashion house Ralph Lauren and Give Me tap recently visited the NGO ProNet North to inspect the various projects undertaken by the NGO which includes the drilling of boreholes in underprivileged communities. .

 The team also learnt how to  install the pumps with the help of experts at Pognyonyiri. .They took turns in doing this whilst the others joined in various fun activities with the students.At the end of the day, the pumps were sucesfully installed and water oozed out. The community gifted them with palm wine to quench their thirst.

The group made a visit to Bulingi Basic school. At Bulingi, the group saw at first hand how borehole  is drilled from  beginning to the last end. They were so happy to witnessed this and some helped when it was required.Whilst the drilling was ongoing, the envoy dispersed into smaller groups to engaged with the students in various plays such as football, music and dance, reading and interactive sessions.

GIZ/REACH Project

The Project for the Promotion and Facilitation Access to Conservation Agriculture and Agroforestry for Climate Resilience is a project funded by GIZ/REACH and is focused on training and building the capacities of Farmer-Based Organizations (FBOs) and VSLAs to equip them with adequate knowledge and tools to adopt conservation agriculture (CA) and cashew agroforestry as sustainable land use and farming systems to build resilience against climate change and empower beneficiaries economically.

ProNet North is implementing the project in three districts in the Upper West Region, namely, Jirapa, Nadowli-Kaleo and Dafiama-Busie-Issa, and is targeted at 56 communities, 112 community groups (FBOs and VSLAs) with an estimated number of 2,800 individual farmers. The project is intended to benefit approximately 14,000 household members of the selected beneficiaries.
